Harris County, Lowndes Take Georgia Softball West for NFCA National Classic

Picture
Fort Collins, Colo. — Two Georgia softball programs are trading familiar red clay for Rocky Mountain dust as Harris County High School and Lowndes High School embark on a landmark trip to Colorado this week to compete in the NFCA F.A.N.-tastic Fall High School Leadoff Classic. The two-day showcase, held August 22–23, will bring together some of the nation’s most competitive high school teams at venues across Fort Collins.

A National Stage for Georgia ProgramsFor Harris County and Lowndes, both perennial playoff contenders in the GHSA, the trip represents far more than just another set of games on the schedule. It is an opportunity to test themselves against top-tier competition from outside the Southeast, while also gaining exposure in an event co-branded by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) and The Female Athlete Network (FAN).
The Classic, played across Fossil Ridge High School, Rocky Mountain High School, and the Triple Crown Sports complex, has grown into one of the most respected early-fall tournaments in the country, drawing recruiters and spotlighting athletes destined for collegiate rosters. For Georgia’s two entrants, it’s a chance to showcase the depth of talent that has made the state a softball powerhouse.

Harris County: A Program on the RiseThe Lady Tigers of Harris County enter the tournament eager to prove they belong among the nation’s best. According to their MaxPreps schedule, Harris County will open Classic play on Friday, Aug. 22 at 1:00 p.m. against Fort Collins High School (CO), with additional matchups slated throughout the weekend.
“This trip is about more than just softball,” said Coach Jenkins. “It’s an opportunity for our athletes to grow as a team, experience a different level of competition, and showcase Georgia softball on a national platform.”
The Lady Tigers open tournament play on August 22 at 1:00 p.m., with additional games scheduled throughout the weekend.

Lowndes: Tradition Meets New Opportunity Meanwhile, the Lowndes Vikettes are set to represent South Georgia. Their “Schedule at a Glance” on MaxPreps shows a marquee matchup against Mead High School (CO) on Friday, Aug. 22 at 1:00 p.m., marking the start of their Colorado campaign.
Lowndes, long respected for its depth and athleticism, views the trip as a chance to further build on its tradition. “This is about putting Georgia softball on the national map,” said Coach Stewart Thomas. “Lowndes kids grow up playing the game at a high level. Now we get to show that brand of softball against not only South Georgia team but teams with different styles and approaches from all over the country”

Why Colorado? The NFCA Classic’s Colorado setting offers a unique wrinkle: altitude. At more than 5,000 feet, pitches move differently and the ball carries farther off the bat, creating an environment that rewards adjustment. Coaches believe that adapting to these conditions, coupled with the pressure of unfamiliar opponents, will pay dividends later in the GHSA season.
The event also highlights how softball’s growth has blurred state borders. National showcases like this one provide a stage for players to be seen by college coaches who may not travel deep into the Southeast during fall recruiting.

A Broader Georgia SpotlightHaving two Georgia schools invited to the Classic underscores the Peach State’s growing reputation in high school softball circles. With state champions and powerhouse programs regularly making national rankings, the inclusion of Harris County and Lowndes speaks to the depth of talent beyond just metro Atlanta giants.

Looking AheadWhen the Lady Tigers and Vikettes return home, they’ll bring more than wins and losses. They’ll carry lessons learned against new opponents, memories of a rare cross-country trip, and the pride of having represented Georgia softball on a national platform.
For now, their mission is clear: show Colorado — and the country — that Georgia softball travels well.
